SESSION 4—PART 2/4: OPTIONAL STUDY

PHYSICAL CONNECTION

This is horrific original video of an experiment with baby monkeys. It’s included in the class to give you the history of how scientists began to understand the importance of non-sexual touch.

In this study Harry Harlow removed infants from their mothers, isolated them from all other monkeys, and only allowed them to nurse on a fake-wire monkey. He wanted to see if they would form an attachment to the fake-wire monkey based on the food source.

The infants did not bond with the wire-mother. And when given the option, they clung to another fake-surrogate who was covered with cloth and did not provide milk. Harlow also deliberately abused, frightened, and terrorized the infants to monitor which fake-surrogate mother they would run to for comfort.

The infants’ emotional distress continued throughout their lives, and when they grew old enough to become parents, they abused and often killed their own children.
